We are ALWAYS LOOKING for motion within the frame. Even if it’s a leaf fluttering. Shooting non-moving stuff is called a “rock shot” and sucks.
Shot types:
Motivated ::: if the camera is following and keeping the subject in the shot
Vs.
Unmotivated ::: opposite. Camera is doing it’s own thing; not tracking. Moving past people or allowing them to move past it.
Tracking shots are MOTIVATED ::: We’re flowing with the subject and keeping them in the shot
Vs.
Dolly shots are UNMOTIVATED ::: We’re going past.
Crane vs Jib ::: In a crane, the camera operator rides with the camera.
Positive action ::: camera and subject are getting closer to each other
vs
Negative action: camera and subject are getting further apart
